2019 Survivor Fallen Angel Profiles: Game Changers

Welcome to the 2019 Survivor Fallen Angel Profile series!

In these threads, we encourage in-depth discussion about the "fallen angels" throughout Survivor history, counting down from the most recent to the original. In this context, a fallen angel is the last player eliminated prior to Final Tribal Council.

What allowed these players to make it to the end game? What are the reasons they fell short? Were they legit threats or coattail riders? How close were they to winning? Who would they have won or lost against had they made it to Final Tribal Council? How was their gameplay, narrative, story, edit, competition, and former or later seasons (if applicable)? What's their Survivor legacy? Are they overrated or underrated as a player and a character? Will they ever return?

These threads are meant for in-depth discussion, not low-effort content. We encourage people to post their detailed thoughts after reflecting on these fallen angels and their paths through the game.

Today's topic: Survivor: Game Changers fallen angel Tai Trang.

  • Method of Elimination: Voted out at F4

  • Individual Immunities won: 1/10

  • Tribal Councils Attended: 14/17

  • Votes Against: 10

  • Correct Votes: 9/13

What allowed these players to make it to the end game?

Tai is naturally incredibly likable, which is going to help him do well on any season. That, combined with his ability to find idols and his remarkable reads with said idols (99% of players would play an idol on themselves in his F7 situation after he got his vote stolen, especially when he had two), allowed him to make endgame, despite getting quite a few votes against him at random times.

What are the reasons they fell short?

Sarah is a fucking wizard and also Brad had a weird grudge against him.

Were they legit threats or coattail riders?

It's unknown. It appears that he loses against Brad and Troyzan but I don't necessarily take those reunion votes too seriously. I think in an F3 against those two he has a very legit shot to win. And he really isn't a coat-tail rider.

How close were they to winning?

See above

Who would they have won or lost against had they made it to Final Tribal Council?

Brad/Troyzan is really his only winnable F3 in that endgame. I can't imagine he beats Sarah, Aubry or Cirie and further back it's hard to say because of how many factors would have to change.

How was their gameplay, narrative, story, edit, competition, and former or later seasons?

In many ways Tai 2.0 is a diet, caffeine-free version of Tai 1.0. His gameplay is pretty similar in that he was fairly wishy-washy in both seasons to the point that it drowned out his natural likability. His narrative is kind of similar but watered-down because we didn't get to see Tai 2.0's emotional journey to nearly the extent that we say Tai 1.0's. His story is pretty clearly a lesser one imo because GC's editing can't tell a story at all compared to Kaoh Rong's. His edit is also a lot weaker. KR Tai got 74 confessionals, while GC Tai got 31. The content is similar but so watered-down. His competition is definitely better here but that doesn't help Tai as a character because GC made sure to edit out the personalities of most of its characters (GC's edit is so fucking bad holy shit). In other words, GC Tai is a mostly inferior KR Tai in pretty much every aspect.

What's their Survivor legacy?

Tai will always be fondly remembered as one of the central characters and main story-drivers to one of modern Survivor's best seasons. As for how GC impacted that legacy, it doesn't really. Tai 2.0 is a retread of a lot of Tai 1.0, so his legacy stays the same. He is a great confessionalist, a fascinating character and a very dynamic player who makes his seasons better.

Are they overrated or underrated as a player and a character?

I think he's appropriately rated in both aspects. People seem to agree that Tai is a very mixed player with some great and terrible qualities. As a character people seem to agree that Tai 1.0 is one of the best characters in all of modern Survivor and Tai 2.0 is an above-average character in GC but still not close to Tai 1.0 because GC sucks compared to KR.

Will they ever return?

I think Tai has a very good shot to return. He's very well-liked by the vast majority of fans, and he always seems up for it. If S40 happens to be another all-returnee season, expect Tai to get a call.

It would have great to see him vs Brad at FTC, two pretty even players. I’d guess Brad would win though, after Tai’s FTC in Kaoh Rong.

level 2

I think the new FTC format could have possibly helped someone like Tai who’s native language isn’t English, as he would have had more time to try to explain his game and have more of a discussion.

level 1

Tai is obviously a great player considering he made it to final 4 twice but as we learned from the reunion Tai doesn't win against Brad and Troyzan. And if he doesn't win against those two it's hard to imagine him beating any combination of players from final 8 onwards. One thing that's apparent about his game play is that he's very good at finding idols but he's not that sure of himself. He always seems to follow the whims of other players like Scott, Jason and Brad. Brad even convinced him that it was a good idea to vote an ally early in the game like Caleb. Tai's very good at getting to the end but he lacks conviction to make his own decisions and therefore he sort of seems to default to whatever sorta-douchy alpha male is playing with him until Aubry comes in and takes him under her wing. The only surefire final 3 combination I see him easily winning in either of his seasons is against Scott and Jason in Kaoh Rong.

I don't think you're giving enough credit to Brad and thus to Tai. Brad basically ran the premerge and the first chunk of the merge iirc. He always had a pocket vote in Troyzan and he was never in danger of losing immunity. Brad played a really solid game in GC, so for Tai to tie Brad in FTC that would be a pretty major accomplishment.

level 3

I definitely think Brad deserves credit for his control of the game pre-merge. But the point still stands that if the reunion questioning is correct Tai still doesn't actually win, he's tied with Brad but he still doesn't win that final 3 which is the most likely final 3 combination for that to happen. Honestly, I'm not so sure that the jury would've actually voted for Brad(at least not five people) because the mindset of a jury is always different on day 39 than it is after you have seen the season play out so its maybe possible that Tai does win that.

I agree that Tai probably ties and loses to Brad, but the point I'm trying to make is that, contrary to what you implied, that's high praise for Tai's game.

as we learned from the reunion Tai doesn't win against Brad and Troyzan. And if he doesn't win against those two it's hard to imagine him beating any combination of players from final 8 onwards.

That's what I disagree with. Out of the F8, Brad was one of the only ones that could've given Sarah a run for her money (Cirie being maybe the only one). I think Tai could've easily beaten any combination of Troyzan, Aubry, Michaela, Andrea (Cirie is a weird case cause idk if she played a great game, but she had the biggest target so if she managed to get to the end I think people would reward that). So, Tai would've beaten half the F8 and he would've tied the other biggest FTC contender. That's pretty impressive.

Tai played well, and i was really sad seeing him go. I won't say he was robbed but i would have prefer him winning than Sarah.

TBH I feel like this shows why Tai will never win he either get's crucified for not being cutthroat enough (KR) or becomes too big of a likability threat to win

he either get's crucified for not being cutthroat enough (KR)

Tai's problem in KR wasn't that he wasn't cutthroat. It's that he was really wishy-washy and ended up directly betraying a sizable amount of that jury.

Not many comments for GC Tai, and I'm not altogether surprised. I absolutely love Tai in Kaoh Rong, but I don't really think there's much to say about him in Game Changers, at least not as a character. I guess as a player you can dig into his jury chances if you're more invested in the season than I am, I don't know, but most people just kinda want to forget this one happened lol and even if not, he didn't get much focus on it.

KR Tai is awesome, legit one of my favorite contestants in the history of the show. In S34, it's not that there's anything wrong with him; he just didn't have as interesting a connection with anyone as the epic Jason/Scot/Tai "alliance" in Kaoh Rong that ranks among the greatest story arcs ever on the show, and he didn't get nearly as much air time.

Because he's such an all-time great casting choice, we still got a handful of good moments throughout the season -- I like his scene with Cirie in I think episode 2?, I think he had some chicken stuff again which worked better the first time but I'll still take it, and he was my favorite contestant in that horrid Tribal Council; his outrage (especially from someone who's usually so soft-spoken and positive) was the most affecting response of anyone, for me. Pretty freaking lame that all the lines from that scene have turned into an unfunny meme, but whatever.

Will they ever return?

I hope so. It's tough to imagine Tai literally ever making a season worse.

tai winning would’ve made GC better

He played the middle really well, I was never sure on whose side he was on (kinda like Spencer and Joe in Cambodia and Zeke in this season). He made the season more exciting to watch.

Only one individual immunity but what a win - he dethroned Ozzy!

But he panicked near the end and told Brad about his idols and he gave one of them to Aubry and he basically shot himself in the foot.

Should have gotten a way better edit

A large part of the reason Brad was so disliked was the way he acted towards Tai at the end of the game. Without stupidly voting him out for revenge and without Tai on the jury to freely talk about what a dick Brad was to him, I don't think he garners so much hate to lose FTC to Tai. Add into the equation Tai's inability to express himself coherently (especially when he's anxious) and how wishy-washy he is and I can't see a way for him to win GC. In fact, because of his wishy-washiness, I don't ever see Tai being taken entirely seriously as a winner by any jury.

He found 3 idols, saved his Mana 2.0 tribe, and found 2 more idols after that. I think he is the only person to find 3 idols in the pre-merge alone. He was on the bottom many times but had great relationships and amazing reads on the game, so he was able to hold onto both idols until Final 6. His game in GC is quite impressive imo. If Sarah went at F4, I really think Tai could’ve won.
