I feel like they made her too powerful. She has like everyone in the MCU's powers combined.

level 1

As much as I loved the spectacle of it, the scene where she smashes through the Krill ships seemed out of place.

SLJ and the woman and the cat are flying home, Captain Marvel is dogfighting the alien pods, it's all going quite well and leading to a showdown against Jude Law hand-to-hand. All good so far. But suddenly three ships drop out of hexagon-warp and launch missiles she has to superman-catch, she goes Super Saiyan and flies through the spaceships in a tremendous explosion! Then she goes right back to where she was five minutes ago for the showdown against Jude Law.

Why dont you comment about the message that no one else is instead of saying no one is posting about the message

Does anyone know when I'll be able to watch this on iTunes and such? Doubt this is the best place to ask, but I'm sure there's someone knowledgeable who knows.

level 1

I'm very mixed on this

On one hand I really like Larson's take on this character. When names were being thrown around for actors to portray Danvers I was worried they were going for a generic action role like Black Widow with names like Yvonne...(Miranda from Mass Effect, I can't spell that last name)...being thrown around. I liked Larson's sarcastic tone, it really fit well in the opening of the film, but as the film progressed, if got more out of place. Larson is believable in this role and it worked.

Also, everything Nick Fury is awesome. In a way, this movie is more of a Nick Fury origin story than Marvel's since we had never seen her before, but it explains a lot of Fury's motivations for actions we the audience has seen him take over the years. He was clever and an accomplished agent who was having his eyes opened to brand new world and he played that role in a believable way that showed his inexperience (something we don't see in the other Fury showings since he is experienced) but also shows that he is fundamentally the same character we know and love. Also his relationship with Goose is purr-fection.

I also enjoyed the main Skrull actor's performance. I wont get into more details to avoid spoilers but he played the role perfectly for what they were going for.

Also I liked both Maria and her daughter.

on the other hand......

every single one of the Kree characters are god-awful. Minn-erva is the only one who even kind of shows some kind of heart in the role, and thats minor. Lets start with Korath, the minion guy from Guardians, because he along with Gemma Chan's Minn-erva are the only 2 that are close to ok...why? because they are the only two that ACT their motivations out..

the other starforce members are forgettable so lets just cut it there and lets move on to something else, utterly unnecessary characters or actors!

spoilers for this section: Hi Annette Benning! Why are you here? You can't be that cheap to get...so maybe had they cast a lesser known actress we would have gotten a tad more screen time and a few more things that SHOW her relationship to Carol before the start of the film

Why is Ronan in this movie? he does nothing. sooo I can only assume he is here because "HE WAS IN GUARDIANS OMG WE NEED MORE CROSS-FILM CONSISTENCY IN THIS FRANCHISE OF DOUBLE DIGIT FILMS!!" In fact...everything I just said goes for The Tesseract as well.

now....Jude Law...oh Jude Law....you didn't want to do this movie did you? its clear in your performance that you really don't give a shit about being here. How is it that most of this character's lines are just delivered in a boring way? Like this character is extremely necessary to the plot, we can't get better takes? I get going for a nonchalant style here, he's supposed to be a space badass, like that is believable....but thats not what they were going for. He isn't a robotic character even though I think they are trying to get him to counsel Carol to be? but he isn't...so her role model doesn't do the thing he..wants her to do? But the only reason its confusing is because how inconsistent Law plays the character. I've heard people complain about Larson's way of acting, but she is at least consistent. Honestly, he reminded me of a discount version of Spock from the J.J Abrams Star Trek films, he his similar beats, but without the interesting consistency

Plot structure? Its fine, I like their unique take on the backstory that made this feel different than the box of other origin films Marvel has.

The effects....kinda looked worse than I expected. Coming off Infinity War and Ant-man and The Wasp, both films with amazing visual effects, I'm pretty confused why this film looks so..uncanny. Not once did Captain Marvel look real when she was flying around..she kinda looked like a character from one of those CW DC shows..

Oh and the blast of the 90's was amazing and as a kid growing up in that era it resonated.

8/10

level 1

It had some good and bad parts, but I got confused, if anyone could please help:

  • There were only a 1000 Skrulls left, right? So why can't they just settle anywhere. A 1000 people could get lost on this planet, much less all the planets in the MCU. Plus, they are shapeshifters?

  • Why did Annette Bening's character need to develop a fast spaceship? If there are only 1000 Skrulls left, couldn't they just take a regular spaceship and fly someplace? I didn't understand how her fast spaceship would help if the Kree could also use a spaceship to track them down.

I was genuinely confused by the movie. But I enjoyed it while I was watching it.

level 1

Whats up with Brie Larson just pulling that thing off of her neck like it was nothing? Had she never tried to do that until then? Like wtf. Everything in this movie just seemed to come too easy to her, really created zero drama for the viewer. Like Ronan, who is supposed to be super powerful (He mollywhopped Drax like nothing), sees a flying blonde chick and says, "nahh im good".

level 2

if she thought that thing was the reason for her powers why would she want to take it off?

level 2

A flying blonde chick that just took down a top of the line warship in less than 30 seconds............

Drax is just a strong dude right? Nothing special about him. If your getting onto little technical things like the neck thing then sure, I'll give you it. But I'll also say that it doesn't matter and the point of the whole scene where she unleashes was to symbolize how women can and have throughout history, done what they've been told and "programmed" not to do.

From his Wiki:

Drax's powers included enhanced strength and resilience, flight, and the ability to project energy blasts from his hands.

Sounds pretty damn close to Captain Marvel. I realize they didnt make Drax that strong in the MCU but still, Ronan told Thanos to fuck off. The fact that some new chick hes never seen shows up and he runs without at least trying anything is kind of nuts.

Furthermore, Ronan's hammer has this ability : "absorb and fire cosmic energy, manipulate matter, generate force-fields, control gravity, and create "time-motion displacement fields".

Sounds pretty capable in theory to at least try something against Danvers. Overall I realize it would not have been the right thing to do but what movies spend 2 hours building up a bad guy as a badass to then not even showcase any of his abilities and have him turn tail and run at the first sign of adversity.

level 4

You just idd exactly what I said didn't matter. Stop being a comic book nerd( not an insult, I'm a fucking video game nerd, I have 100,000 gamer score on xbox) and enjoy the movie. Besides, Ronan was younger back then and he wasn't the "Acuser" yet. Also, its not like he just shit his pants and cried. He retreated and said that "we'll be back for the weapon". Retreating isn't a sign of weakness. He knew what the best play at the moment was.

Anyways, I don't see why you are all of suddenly attacking this movie for making Ronan look like a pussy, when GOTG already did that by having him die to Peter Quill after he dances on him.....

EDIT: To go in further, why reference a wiki about the comics when we are talking about the movies? Your whole retort about Drax is irrelevant. Oh and why didn't you even respond to what I really said, which is that movie's message was the important part, not the 5 year old kid action scenes?

level 5

Dude. You realize you are on an internet message board right now with people doing message board things? Im strictly making a claim that they could have made him so much more badass in this movie which would have improved the movie drastically, especially since this movie really had no powerful bad guys. Anyways, this is obviously going no where so I agree to disagree.

level 6

Ah, the ole "I'm beat and have no more ammo so I'll act like I'm better than this and leave" tactic aye? You truly are a message board warrior lol. I'm done with you, you're dismissed.

level 7

Says the tough guy trying to treat this like it’s a sport or fight or something. No one has to win in a conversation dude. You should work at your communication skills.

level 8

You're dismissed.

(don't fight for the last word, loser)

level 2

She flew through a space ship and destroyed it instantly so yeah, what can you do to defend against that?

level 3

Ronan told Thanos to fuck off. I think its kind of weird that some unknown girl shows up and he doesnt at least try to assert his authority.

Well of all the Marvel movies I've seen that was certainly one of them.

It checked all the boxes. Lack of any real danger to the main character. Overuse of comedic relief that completely removes me from the drama of the plot. Dumb character decisions that make 0 logical sense and are only included to feign as if a character is actually in trouble. The writers hitting us over the head with explanations of every detail because they think we can't piece shit together on our own.

I don't know what I expected.

level 1

Not a bad movie, not a great movie.

Carol was likable enough (definitely didn't get all the Brie hate. I thought she did a good job with the poor script she was handed), but I just felt like there was no suspense as long as she was around. She's got so much power, and freaking Ronan just left. Ronan, the guy who spat in face of Thanos and went his own way (yes, Thanos didn't have all his power yet, but gosh, Captain Marvel is STRONG). Granted, I mean I would too if I were him, but with her being so powerful, I never had any doubt who was going to win when she was there.

Definitely a fun (if flawed) movie, but I hope Endgame can keep up the incredible suspense Infinity War had now that Carol's here.

level 2

I thought the same thing when Ronan just peaced out. Like he beat the living fuck out of Drax and then sees some flying blonde chick and hes like, CYA.

level 1

Crackpot theory: the little black girl will become MCU's Ironheart (Riri Williams in the comics) after RDJ's Iron Man dies/retires in Endgame. The hair matches plus I can't shake the offhanded comment about her building a spaceship. Seems like foreshadowing to her genious-level intelligence.

level 2

If Feige did that the comic book fan backlash 10 fold what it is now.

level 2

I was thinking so too. The way they frame her watching Carol fly off seemed origin-story motivation.

level 3

Expect now that I actually read what her name was I realised she will actually become Spectrum: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monica_Rambeau
